‘Threatened’, 2010 by Imran Qureshi is a work that was created for a Gandhara Art exhibition at the Pao Galleries, Hong Kong Art Centre in 2010. This exhibiton “Blessings Upon The Land Of My Love’ is special as this was the genesis of Imran’s scarlet abstract action paintings which were created in the aftermath of a violent attack at a market near his home in the same year. The first painting was titled ‘You Who Are My Love and My Life’s Enemy Too’ and was the genesis of the direction of Qureshi’s work which has been seen in multiple Biennials and public art commissions all over the world including the Sharjah and the Sydney Biennals amongst others. Along with these large scale abstract works at this exhibition was this gem of a miniature painting titled ‘Threatened’ which revealed a red parasite invading the leaves of this verdant tree inspired by the foliage of the 18th Century Kangra and Basholi court paintings of the Punjab Hills princely states. This painting was mirroring the action in Qureshi’s large scale abstract paintings.

This painting has been on loan to various international museums and public institutions and was most notably exhibited at The Metropolitan Musem of Art in 2013 at the exhibition of Qureshi’s paintings at the museum along with his Roof Garden Commission in 2013. This work was featured on the invitation of the opening of the Roof Garden Commission and was published in the accompanying catalogue.
