– Noormah Jamal’s Atan series asserts her childhood understanding of the art historical canon. Once believing Matisse’s Dance to be not a European painting, but a Pakistani depiction of an Pakhtun Atan (a regional folk dance), Noormah reclaims this imagery to think about her own journey. Bringing in symbols rooted in pastoral culture in Peshawar, the Atan series transforms a classic European painting into a fantastical narrative about her own personal history.
