Kiran Waseem graduated from NCA Lahore with Honours in Painting. Her work is inspired by the idea of motion, both physical and metaphysical, transcending the confounds of imagination. In addition to being a practicing visual artist, Kiran is also a vocalist. According to her, music has always been an inspiration and it helps in her studio practice.
In her work, Kiran explores the ephemeral nature of moments, capturing the transience. Each painting is a reflection of a particular place she has experienced during her travels, embodying the fleeting quality of time and memory. Night travel, with its poetic and serene atmosphere, serves as a powerful metaphor for this exploration. The essence of her work lies in the interplay between light and darkness, clarity and obscurity. The hazy, dreamlike quality is central in her practice. It’s not just about what is seen, but also about what is felt—the emotional resonance of a place that lingers in the mind long after the moment has passed. Traveling, particularly at night, symbolises a journey not just through physical spaces but also through memories and emotions. Kiran’s work is an attempt to capture the essence of these experiences, which often remain in our consciousness in fragmented, half-remembered pieces. Like memories, nightscapes are seldom clear-cut; they are imbued with a sense of ambiguity. She finds inspiration in the quiet moments, the stillness that allows for reflection. The use of diffused light and shadow in her paintings serves as a metaphor for the passage of time and the impermanence of experiences. The blurred lines and soft edges are intentional, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgia. They represent the fluidity of memory and the way we reconstruct past experiences, often tinged with emotion and subjectivity.
