During my visit to Harvard last week, I had a roundtable with Graduate /Phd students in Prof Vishal Khandelwal’s class, Architecture, Urbanism, and Design in a Global South Asia: 18th Century to the Present.
This was a very generative conversation where we explored diverse perspectives and histories related to architecture and urbanism in South Asia, many themes that are central to my work.
I shared some small drawings from old sketchbooks that explore ways to articulate both personal as well as collective experiences of mapping the city of Karachi. To think about the monsoon and how it impacts the structures of the city. Walking and exploring the material of the city, like “an urban experience of learning and unlearning.”

These works are rooted in a specific locale, but have resonance in the way I think about spatiality, about south Asia, the way history and faith interact in the most material and lived way.
