How to Become a Rock, by Fazal Rizvi with Paulina Ruiz Carballido, Faheem Abbas and Mujeeb Ruzik, is presented at The Gallery at VCUarts Qatar through sculpture, video, sound, drawing and text. The exhibition considers the limits of the self and the body through questions of closeness and distance, sameness and difference, movement and rest, bringing the human body into relation with ecological bodies.

The project emerged from time spent in the terrain of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly the Gojal region, and began with an attention to stillness and the slow geological processes of the landscape. From this starting point, the work considers how people and land mark and instruct one another, and asks how bodies, places and ecological systems might be understood through their agencies, intimacies and forms of accountability.

Originally commissioned for Lahore Biennale 03 — Of Mountains and Seas, curated by John Tain with support from the French Embassy in Pakistan, How to Become a Rock continues its engagement with the relationship between the body and the landscapes through which it moves.
