We are pleased to share the acquisition of Tazeen Qayyum’s ‘Fahm فھم (to understand)’ (2024) into the Doris McCarthy Gallery’s permanent collection!

‘Fahm فھم (to understand)’ is a calligraphic work on paper written in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan. The spiraling formation that emerges from repeating a single word transforms the written words into a visual form, inviting viewers to engage with the piece beyond linguistic comprehension. ‘Fahm فھم (to understand)’ encourages contemplation on whether understanding the literal meaning is necessary or if one can connect through the visual rhythm and form of the language itself.

Trained as a miniature painter of South Asian and Persian traditions, Pakistani-Canadian artist Tazeen Qayyum continues to explore new materials and processes through drawing, installation, sculpture, video, and performance. Repetition, rhythm, balance, and geometry are methodological devices that allow her to create visually complex artworks and offer viewers a multi-layered understanding of materials and techniques used. Drawing from complex issues of belonging and displacement within a socio-political context, her art is a way for her to navigate identity and beliefs living in the diaspora.
