My installation Blooms is on view at Wave Hill.
The installation brings together hand-built ceramic figures emerging from gravel, creating a landscape that considers the relationship between people, place, and memory. The work draws from my connection to my hometown of Peshawar, Pakistan, a city whose name translates to “city of flowers,” despite its dry landscape and one shaped by a complex and often difficult socio-political history of colonialism, conflict, migration, and displacement. In Blooms, I imagine the people who inhabit the city as its flowers, each emerging from and belonging to the landscape in their own way. The surfaces of the sculptures are carved with individual terrains, allowing each figure to hold fragments of place, memory, and lived experience.
The installation runs through October 19.
