I am pleased to announce my participation in Rehearsing the Unexpected, the first edition of Bienal Climática in Avilés, Asturias, opening June 11th. The Biennial brings together artists and organisations to reflect, through art, culture, and landscape, on shared concerns such as employment, the relationship between rural and urban life, and democratic coexistence. It has been an incredibly thoughtful curatorial conversation with the @bienalclimatica team.
My works, Study to Find a Geometry No. I and II, explore the afterlife of empire and its legacy. Stencil-like structures are imposed over historical paintings and contemporary landscapes to reveal underlying geometries and the visible and invisible relations between land and memory. In doing so, pointing to ideas of cartography, surveillance, and how land spatialises power.
The works reference two landscapes: the Trading Post of the Dutch East India Company in Hooghly, Bengal, 1665 by Hendrik van Schuylenburgh and a photograph taken by me which captures the urban growth of land towards North Karachi, taken in 2021.
The full programme is now available to consult. Under the title Rehearsing the Unexpected, the Biennial will bring together more than 40 artists across 13 exhibition venues from 12 June to 20 September, alongside more than 60 activities.
