Chawkandi Art Gallery is delighted to present Amna Rahman’s Locus: Where Eyes Settle.

Rahman’s practice reconsiders surveillance as a critical lens, turning toward the masculine-coded public spaces of Karachi. From water tankers in Korangi to the fisheries of Ibrahim Hyderi, her work traces how women move through sites shaped by water politics, informal networks, and ecological precarity. Within these layered environments, the female body becomes both anchored and hyper-visible held in shifting fields of observation: whether in a dhaba watching an Indian film or in an electronic market in Clifton.

The Karachi-based artist has recently expanded her practice through community-based engagement with fishermen and boat-dwelling communities in Sindh. This ongoing research extends her inquiry into the entanglements of gender performance and ecology, tracing how human and environmental histories intersect and co-evolve. In her words, “Drawing from Karachi’s class-stratified access to water and coastal displacement, women’s presence unsettles gender norms, transforming water infrastructures and maritime spaces into negotiated spaces where access, power, and visibility are reimagined.”
