For the latest installment of “On View,” Aiza Ahmed (@aizaahmedstudio) takes us through her debut New York solo exhibition “The Music Room.”

Drawing inspiration from Satyajit Ray’s 1958 film “Jalsaghar” (The Music Room), Ahmed transforms painting, sculpture, and sound into an immersive installation that reimagines the cinematic space as one authored by women. Her large-scale paintings and cut-out figures animate the gallery with gestures and scenes from the film, while a sound composition by @ria_modak evokes its classical score through a contemporary lens. Together, Ahmed and Modak propose another way of seeing—a music room authored by women.

“The Music Room” reflects on inheritance, performance, and power—turning a site once defined by patriarchal spectacle into a stage for new ways of seeing and listening.
