Jeffrey Grove, Director of Museums and Publications at Sean Kelly shares Shahzia Sikander’s newest mosaic, The Hour Glass, which is currently being premiered on our booth at Art Basel for his pick for .

Shahzia Sikander is one of the foremost artists of her generation, a Pakistani-American artist who for many years has been recognized for her ability to infuse traditional imagery with fresh, new, contemporary ideas. Many of Shahzia’s mosaics are produced by Mayer of Munich, a renowned stained glass studio in Germany with a legacy spanning 5 generations. In The Hour Glass, Shahzia has returned to the form that she originally conceived in the early 90s while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design.

This is a floating figure with these root-like forms in place of the appendages of arms and legs. They represent freedom, power, womanhood, the ability to transgress and transform, and move beyond boundaries. Another popular form that reappears in her work is the Lotus, which in many cultures represents many different things, including humility, spiritual awakening, and even love.

If you happen to be in Basel this weekend, please stop by and visit us to see Shahzia’s work in our booth. If not, please stop by one of our galleries in New York City or Los Angeles to learn more about Shahzia.
