3 Figures (Gadrang)

Gouache, ink and pencil on wasli 15×11.5 inches (38.1×29.2 cm) Exhibited @mere humd(r)um, Aicon Gallery, New York, 2012. Rehana Mangi’s works are very personal, drawing upon her memories as a child growing up in a Pakistani village, and her days at school. She first started drawing as a therapeutic activity after suffering a personal trauma. Later, she began weaving her hair into the artwork to commemorate her illness as well as her village’s tradition for weaving. Her artworks soon took on a life of their own, recalling her fantasies, dreams and memories, and blending these into surreal dreamscapes.

In her artist statement, Mangi notes, “ My work in totality is a depiction of the truth within me, it is resilient, contemporary and the paths and hardships all endured by me in the course of my life have all been moulded and refined to manifest the intricacy of my work.”

The artist’s works have been exhibited in group shows, including ‘Méré Humd(r)um’ and ‘Reprise’ at Aicon Gallery, New York, in 2012 and 2011 respectively. She also participated in the 2008 group exhibition, ‘The Human Dichotomy’, with artists Tazeen Qayyum, Attiya Shaukat, and Aisha Hussain at Aicon Gallery, Palo @official.rehanamangi
