Next @sanat_initiative “A Fragmented Tale” by @studio_asif_ahmed which opens on Tuesday 22 April
Asif Ahmed (b. 1980, Karachi) graduated with distinction in Miniature Painting from NCA Lahore in 2004. He was awarded the esteemed “Ustad Haji Sharif Award” for the best miniature artist from the batch of 2004. He has to his credit numerous exhibitions as well as participation in art fairs across the world including France, Oman, Morocco, India, UK, Japan, UAE, Singapore, Switzerland, Lebanon, United States and Pakistan. His work has been auctioned at Sotheby’s and Saffron Art.
Asif’s work explores the rich tradition of miniature painting while reinterpreting its essence in a contemporary context. Rooted in history, miniature painting tells stories of power, devotion and daily life with meticulous detail. Asif draws from this visual language, engaging with its intricate craftsmanship and narrative depth to bridge the past and present by fragmenting images into pieces, challenging the notion of a singular, fixed perspective. This deconstruction allows for a dynamic interplay between history and modernity, inviting viewers to reconstruct the meaning in a new way. The act of breaking and reassembling speaks to the shifting nature of identity, memory and cultural heritage. Through this process, Asif aims to evoke both nostalgia and discovery, honoring the tradition of miniature painting while pushing its boundaries into new artistic territories. His work is a dialogue between time periods, questioning how historical imagery can remain relevant in a rapidly evolving world.
