A solo show of Risham Syed, ‘Chait Vasraand …What The Rain Remembers’, opened on Tuesday November 19th 2024 @ Canvas Gallery.
A critically acclaimed artist and educationist, Risham is an alumnus of NCA with an MA from the Royal College of Art, London. She is Professor and Head of the Department of Fine Arts at School of Visual Arts & Design, Beaconhouse National University (SVAD-BNU), Lahore.
Risham has exhibited extensively, globally and locally. Her work is part of important public and private collections worldwide. She lives and works in Lahore.
In Risham’s words: “Through 'Chait Vasraand (What the Rain Remembers),' I assemble fragments of memory, testimony, and resilience. Imbued with the weight of history, these fragments bear witness to the human capacity for endurance.
The vintage Chinese jacquard silk panels I inherited from my late mother, provided me with a base to speak about a complex narrative of power dynamics and the human cost of conflict. I also used borders and motives from textiles I have grown up with. The red and green panels with printed maps expose the stark reality of territorial disputes, where political lines supersede human lives.
In 'Chait Vasraand,' I invite viewers to confront the entangled threads of our existence, where past and present, and local and global intersect.
